Greetings from the Executive Director
It is always such a pleasure to witness all of the great "partnership" work being done in Texas schools.  But for those of you responsible for the development and sustainability of education partnerships, you know that the hard work is just beginning.  The recent downturn in the economy, resulting from rising prices for food and gasoline and a reduced property tax base, is challenging schools to rely even more heavily on the business and community partners in their region.

The Texas Association of Partners in Education has a few ways we can help education partnership professionals to be more efficient and effective with their partnership programs.
1)  Our Regional Partnership Planning Forums help school professionals strategically align their partnership programs with the needs of the community by dialoguing with the business, community and civic leaders in the area;
2)  Our upcoming publication, "Soaring to New Heights in Education: Powerful Partnership Practices Across Texas" will be launched in January 2009.  This much needed resource will showcase proven partnership practices in a "how to guide" for partnership professionals;
3)  In 2009, TAPE will celebrate 30 years of connecting volunteers, business and community to schools at our Texas Education Partnership Conference in Austin.  The conference will showcase best education partnership practices from across Texas and the US including "Cooking Up Partnerships".  This unique partnership with the Hilton Garden Inn and Austin ISD culinary program will open your eyes to "new possibilities and innovations" in education partnership programs.

We hope you will take advantage of these opportunities provided by TAPE as we follow our mission, to help you and your education partners have a positive and measurable impact on your school or district.

Reviewing Your Volunteer Job Descriptions
During this time of economic uncertainty, many organizations will see resources become more limited; including, potentially, the resource of man-power through volunteer involvement.  In order to maintain an appeal to the ever changing volunteer pool, organizations will need to think outside the box, to retain current volunteers and attract new ones.  Updating and creating new innovative volunteer tasks is a great way to maintain a healthy volunteer climate within your organization.  Again, a group approach is helpful when tackling the issue of recruitment and marketing so as to gain multiple perspectives and hopefully fresh ideas on volunteer tasks.
As you begin to review your existing volunteer positions consider the following; the written volunteer task description should emphasize the needs of the clients rather than the organization;  clearly state how volunteers can be part of the solution; illustrate the inherent benefits in the volunteer work; and accurately state the necessary time commitment and resources necessary for the work.
To develop new volunteer opportunities ask staff to complete a job assessment to identify potential opportunities for volunteer support.  (To view a template click here)  Based upon your feedback from fellow staff persons, you can build your new volunteer opportunities.  Remember as many tasks as you have within your organization, even if they are considered boring or mundane by some staff, there is a volunteer somewhere ready and eager to fill it!
