Help With the Bobcat Backpack Program....
This program provides food on weekends and holidays for students who have been identified as in need.  The non-perishable food is packed in a backpack by volunteers and sent home prior to the weekends and holidays.  The students return the backpacks each week to be packed again.  Our staff have witnessed the children benefit physically, mentally, and even socially from this program!  If you are interested in helping with the Bobcat Backpack Program, read more about it on our website home page, or contact Jeannie Brooks at jbrooks@hisd.com to make a donation or sponsor a child.  Support is needed each year to continue this wonderful program!  If you would like to volunteer to help pack the backpacks, like the volunteers spotlighted in the photo (Former HHS Counselors, Sue McGarvey and Anne Orre, as well as Robin Hendrix, Lisa Tucker, Kerry Kilgore, Elizabeth LeBus, and Michelle York), contact Angie Mauldin at amauldin@hisd.com.

Help Prepare for Red Ribbon Week...
Volunteers, Erin Graham and Tiffany Stovall, helped prepare for 2007 Red Ribbon Week, which is a national campaign that encourages students to "Say NO to Drugs and Alcohol" and live a healthier lifestyle!  Volunteers and some of the counselors get together and plan daily events for the week.  The volunteers put everything together for the teachers and deliver it to the campuses.

Help with Western Days...
You never know what I might get you into when I meet you in town...just ask Jim Lewis.  I met Jim in Wal-Mart as I was purchasing door prizes for HISD Volunteer Appreciation Week in the Spring of 2007.  Noticing what I had in my buggy, he asked me about my job.  I, in turn, asked him what he did.  He and his wife demonstrate Dutch Oven Cooking.  I told him that he ought to come and do a demonstration for the 2007 Western Days Festivities at our school, so they did!  They made cinnamon biscuits for all of the second grade classes.  They were a big hit!  How nice of them to share their talents, abilities, and love of a lost art with our children!

Dads' Club Member, Tommy Russell, (pictured on Dads' Club web page) helped with Western Days also.  He offered to pull the hayride with his tractor.  What a great way to interact with the students and help them to have a fun time!  What do you have to offer?  Your talents, skills, and abilities can be used to help us help kids!  If you are interested, contact me at amauldin@hisd.com, or by calling (903)668-5990, ext. 1444.

Dads' Club Chess Tournament
The first annual Dad's Club Sponsored Chess Tournament took place in October 2007.  It was successful...having about 25 students participate.  Kerry Kilgore (pictured on Dads' Club web page) is just one of the DC members who helped that day.  We are thankful for all those who made it a neat experience for all involved.
